PTE Summarize Spoken Text: Format, Scoring and Tips
AI score + feedback
PTE Academic & PTE Core
Summarize Spoken Text plays a short recording once; you then write a summary of it. It counts towards both Listening and Writing, so careful notes and a clean, accurate summary both pay off.
How the task works
- Audio
- PTE Academic: 60–90 seconds. PTE Core: 45–75 seconds. Played once.
- Time
- PTE Academic: 10 minutes. PTE Core: 8 minutes.
- Length
- PTE Academic: 50–70 words. PTE Core: 20–30 words.
- Scored on
- Content, form, grammar, vocabulary and spelling
- Counts for
- Listening and Writing
Strategies that help
- Note keywords as you listen: the topic, the main idea and two or three supporting points.
- Write in full sentences: the topic and main point first, then the supporting points, joined with connectors.
- Stay inside the word range for your test — form is scored, and very short or very long answers lose heavily.
- Leave a minute to check spelling and grammar; each counts.
Common mistakes
- Writing a list of notes instead of sentences.
- Going well over or under the word range.
- Including a small detail but missing the speaker’s main point.
Example
The speaker explains that sleep is essential for memory. During deep sleep, the brain organises information learned during the day, which is why students who sleep well remember more. The speaker therefore recommends a regular bedtime before exams rather than late-night studying.
About 50 words for PTE Academic: main idea, explanation and the speaker’s recommendation.
