PTE Write Email: Format, Scoring and Tips
AI score + feedback
PTE Core
Write Email is a PTE Core task. You read a short situation and write an email that does what it asks — for example, request something, explain a problem or make an arrangement. Writing like a real email, with the right tone, is part of the score.
How the task works
- Prompt
- A situation of up to 100 words
- Time
- 9 minutes
- Length
- Aim for about 80–120 words, as the task instruction says
- Scored on
- Content, email conventions, form, organisation, grammar, vocabulary range and spelling
- Counts for
- الكتابة
Strategies that help
- Use a clear email shape: greeting, why you are writing, the details, what you want to happen next, and a sign-off.
- Cover every point the situation asks for — tick them off in your head before you finish.
- Match the tone to the reader: “Dear Ms Lee” and “Kind regards” for a manager; “Hi Tom” and “Thanks” for a friend.
- Keep sentences short and accurate, and leave a minute to check spelling.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out one of the points the prompt asks you to include.
- No greeting or no sign-off.
- A tone that does not fit the reader.
Example
Dear Ms Lee, I am writing to ask if I could move my shift on Friday 12 June. I have a medical appointment that morning that I could not reschedule. I would be happy to work on Saturday instead, or to swap with a colleague. Please let me know which option suits you. Kind regards, Daniel
Purpose, reason, offer and request for a reply, in a polite workplace tone.
