PTE Reading practice

Reading is the second part of the test and runs on one shared timer for all of its questions, so pacing matters as much as accuracy. The tasks check that you can follow academic or everyday texts, choose words that fit both meaning and grammar, and work out how a text is organised.

Reading question types

PTE Academic

  • Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown)
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
  • Reorder Paragraph
  • Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop)
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer

PTE Core

  • Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown)
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
  • Reorder Paragraph
  • Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop)
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer

What makes the difference

  • Fill in the Blanks tasks reward collocations — words that naturally go together — as much as meaning. Read the whole sentence before choosing.
  • Multiple-answer questions take marks away for wrong choices, so only pick options you can support from the text.
  • Keep an eye on the part timer: there is no separate clock per question.
