PTE Writing practice

The Writing tasks come right after Speaking in the first part of the test. Each one has its own timer and a word range you have to stay inside: a one-sentence summary of a passage, an argumentative essay (PTE Academic) or an email (PTE Core). Writing skills are also scored in listening-and-writing tasks such as Write From Dictation and Summarize Spoken Text.

Writing question types

PTE Academic

  • Summarize Written Text
  • Write Essay

PTE Core

  • Summarize Written Text
  • Write Email

What makes the difference

  • Stay inside the word range — form is scored, and a response outside it can lose most of its marks.
  • Plan for a minute before you type, and keep two or three minutes at the end to check spelling and grammar.
  • Use clear, accurate sentences rather than long, complicated ones; mistakes cost more than simple language does.
